  • Acrobatics

Acro combines dance steps with acrobatic tricks. Tricks such as cartwheels, walkovers, and balances including elbow stands and chest stands are developed on an individual basis within a class. The best example of a professional acrobatic dance troupe today is Cirque du Soleil.
  • Ballet

Think of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Rudolf Nureyev and Karen Kain. Ballet is the technical foundation for dance, which focuses on development of posture, turnout, articulation of the feet, extensions and overall body placement. In later years, students may also progress to dancing on pointe (at the teacher's discretion) when they have developed enough strength.
  • Contemporary / Modern

Modern technique is based on the teachings of modern greats such as Martha Graham, Jose Limon, and Lester Horton. It focuses on a strong technical base, but also allows for creativity and expression through movement. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre company personifies this form.
  • Hip Hop

Ages 7 years and up. Street dance styles that have come into being as part of the Hip Hop culture. Students will learn to explore movement like they see on the latest movie videos that are suitable for their age level.
  • Jazz

Jazz is a very popular dance form evolving from dance hall reviews and Broadway theatre into the smooth style that is taught today. Jazz styles now vary greatly from musical theatre (influenced by Bob Fosse) to commercials (think of the choreography for The Gap) to contemporary (Wade Robson's work for Fox's So You Think You Can Dance).
  • Musical Theatre

  • Pre-Dance

Pre-dance is designed for 3 and 4 year olds to introduce them to the environment of dance in a playful and creative way. Basic locomotive skills such as skipping, marching, and jumping are practiced, as well as many creative movement exercises, which develop overall body awareness. Use of props such as tambourines and maracas develops the rhythm.
  • Tap

Popularized by Vaudeville performers of the 1930s and 1940s such as Fred Astaire, Bill "Bojangles"Robinson and Gene Kelly tap is~often referred to as the percussion of dance, because of the metal taps on the shoes which produce the noise. Emphasis is on rhythm, and clarity and dexterity of the feet. Contemporary tappers include Savion Glover and the late Gregory Hines who personified classical tap in the 80s and 90s.

Examinations/Medal Tests

SDA prepares and trains students for exams and medal tests annually through PAEC (Performing Arts Educators of Canada), from which our faculty consistently produce strong results . Exams can provide motivation and a sense of achievement as students are tested on a set sequence of skills through the examination process.

Students are encouraged to take exams/medal tests at the discretion of the teaching faculty, who base their decisions on physical capability, knowledge of the syllabus, technical execution, and quality of each dancer's overall presentation.
